Every fall weekend bears a bite of bittersweet wonder around here. I finally tracked down Black-bellied Plover , a shorebird species that had been eluding me for the county for years, plus a bonus bird in the form of a very infrequent Forster’s Tern hobnobbing with the usual Caspians. Your 2018 year lists, whether you tally them or not, have already begun to populate, silently bearing witness to your commitment to bird looking or lack thereof. I enjoyed my first wave of feeder birds for the year, with Tufted Titmouse winning BBOTW honors only because that species appears less frequently than my other local denizens.

April bears the most fruit for my family tree, including my own bad apple birthday this week. While I didn’t notice any Neotropical migrants this weekend, I was pleased to spot a Tufted Titmouse , a species I tend to miss during winter. Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. I observe them, but feel I still lack experience to tell with certainty the SEO from LEO in flight.

We only have Common Moorhens that make more Common Moorhens.

So close to the pole only a handful of bird species can survive, and even so, death toll is very high, hence their populations must be huge (millions). There are 11 species of birds that breed in the Ross Sea region. Finally – the Seabirds. As a consequence, the Ross Sea has one of the highest concentrations of seabirds in the world.

My first experience birding was as a teenager back in the 70s, when birding meant a pair of binoculars, a couple of bird feeders, and a smallish field guide (book).
