Before we got to our destination, I pulled the car over to investigate an almost deafening twittering. A Lineated Woodpecker banged its head against a dry branch.

Trinidad’s Coastal Forest

Much smaller but no less deadly, a Bat Falcon dines on a bat in the mid-morning perched comfortably on a roadside stump. Tanagers, flycatchers, woodcreepers, woodpeckers, cuckoos – the seeker is guaranteed to be rewarded. A Lineated Woodpecker and the much larger Crimson-crested Woodpecker making a landing behind it.

Other quality birds seen in the park that morning included the endemic Wattled Ibis, Banded Snake Eagle , migrant Pallid Harriers, Nubian Woodpecker and Brown Babbler. Mago National Park certainly deserved more exploration and I wished we had time to investigate the well appointed campsites along the Mago River.

Birding Borneo with Non Birders

My Dad is less of a biologist and more interested in history, but is also laid back and happy enough watching us have fun, but we even managed to find some historical sites to investigate. We went with a local company, Borneo Eco Tours. Another endemic, the Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrush. Tabunan Rafflesia Centre. Danum Valley.
