A few spots manage to persist and welcome them in this human-dominated landscape. Keep birding and you might see a White-tailed Kite hovering as it hunts rodents and one of the few Bat Falcons in the Valley might dash into view. I worry because no protection is given to such supposed “trash” habitats.

Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ).

I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites). the scene where Jochen’s saw his BBOTY – a Bat Hawk.
