Queensland’s First Nordmann’s Greenshank

Down here in Australia one can be a birder for a long time without experiencing a proper twitch. This was the first record for my home state of Queensland, indeed a first record for anywhere in Australia away from the north west area of Western Australia. Nordmann’s Greenshank on the Cairns Esplanade [Adrian Walsh].

According to Wikipedia, the national bird of Australia is the Emu – which I have not seen yet. On the other hand, some websites state that the Laughing Kookaburra is Australia’s national symbol. It was among the first birds to be scientifically described in Australia.

Week Nine: Auckland, and points north.

We are spending some time here on my wife’s family property right on the water. My Father-in-law had worked with the DOC here to establish a managed wetland here on the property, and it has been well received by the very rare Brown Teal. What an incredible place, and as a bonus, it is loaded with birds.
