Well, basically it is a good area for putting a nest as there is ample food nearby and the dunes offer protection and good views of incoming predators. Here are some of the experiences of the Pied Oystercatcher chick on Cable Beach in the last 4 weeks. Why would Pied Oystercatchers been keen to use an area with all this activity?

Couas and koels are both cuckoos, saw-wings are swallows and logrunners are an odd unique thing from Australia who’s only relative is the charmingly named Chowchilla). I’d never heard of them until 2005 when I saw some in the Botanical Gardens of Canberra in Australia. What, exactly, is a pardalote? A Spotted Pardalote !

That really is flooding rain and quite an experience. The family are inside the Poo Pond fence, so they are protected to a certain extent, but they are still their usual vocal selves. Birding Australia Broome Common Sandpiper dotterels lapwings' Masked Lapwing peering through the Poo Pond fence.

The Red-capped Plover Charadrius ruficapillus is a very cute shorebird that is often seen scurrying along the shoreline around Australia. They both take responsibility protecting their young and remain in a family group for a period of time. The estimated population is 95 000.

Reportedly, the Water Thick-knee sometimes locates its nest close to the nest of Nile crocodiles as this offers some protection. While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. They exercised this activity in part-time (96.5%).

They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!
