I can’t claim that the playful bird image that accompanies this release is an obvious likeness of any particular species – it’s more of a generic songbird that most people (i.e., non-birders) envision when they hear the word “bird” – but it bears a passing resemblance to the American Robin.

It’s the bird family that most people don’t know is a bird family. For many years it was thought the two bird families were related taxonomically. It includes a table listing the species, subspecies, author and date of original description, which I found quite handy in sorting out the birds. Introduction.

Most birders know better than to fall prey to such sensationalism, but among the public at large, Australia is notorious for being a land creeping and crawling with dangerous and even lethal wildlife at every turn. And not just deep in the bush, either, but at the beach, in urban parks – even in the country’s suburban homes.

As my opening word suggests; the Sunshine Coast is located in Australia as the attached Google map illustrates. So, while I am lucky enough to live with my wife and family near the village of Mapleton, in the Blackall Ranges, first join me for a little journey to part of the coast. The Little Wattlebird was also conspicuous.

New Zealand, where I live, am the 10,000 Birds Beat Writer of, and of which I very occasionally actually write about, is home to several species of heron. It wasn’t always this way.
