Brown Thrashers , large, rust-colored songbirds, were so popular in Georgia that they became the namesake of their NHL hockey team, the “Atlanta Thrashers!” ” It comes as no surprise then that the governor proclaimed the Brown Thrasher the state bird in 1953 , and the legislature followed suit in 1970.

The hours are ticking down to Super Bowl LI, a hotly anticipated contest between perennial contenders New England Patriots and the upstart, high-flying Atlanta Falcons. Will the Atlanta Falcons actually win the Super Bowl? In the previous 50 Super Bowl match-ups, only twice has a football team named for a bird emerged victorious.

Those of us perched precariously at the intersection of birds and sports couldn’t help but hope for a Bird Bowl, where both teams competing in Super Bowl XLVII were named for birds. Alas, Atlanta couldn’t seal the deal in the second half, but Baltimore bullied their way to the Big Game.

Coming into the second weekend of this new year, we’ve all added a few birds — possibly very few birds — to our year lists. I gave up year listing a couple of annums back even though I’ve rung up some banner bird bounties in 2010 and 2011. What will you be doing this weekend and where will you be birding?

I have to admit, I normally have a twinge when I see the phrase “backyard birds.” ” Not because there’s anything wrong with common or confiding species, but because depending on where you live and what you do with your habitat, darn near anything can be a backyard bird.

Almost any park, even within large cities such as New Orleans and Atlanta, will host such quintessentially common Nearctic species such as Field , Song , Chipping , and White-throated Sparrow in good numbers. We are just too far south for any of the above mentioned species, but that is not to say that we do not get any sparrows at all.
