They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

Elephants are being screwed by Asian demand for ivory. Officials say the sales have fuelled demand for ivory in Asian countries, especially China, contributing to a sharp increase in elephant poaching. So far this year poachers in Kenya have killed 128 elephants for their ivory; last year 98 were killed. It's a mess.

Hence, for the rest of the world, I lowered my threshold to 400 and that worked well in Africa, but I soon discovered that for Asia I need to go further down, to 300. In this first part, I’ll focus on continental Asia, its south and south-east (Oriental region). Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger , Leopard.

Europe has one species (Eurasian Spoonbill), the Americas have one (Roseate Spoonbill), Australia two (Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill), and Asia has two as well (Eurasian and Black-faced Spoonbill). The Natal Spurfowl forages on rhinoceros and elephant dung (HBW) and does so without complaining. Ostriches originated in Asia.

Contrast this in Asia to, say, Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok, all of which have great birding nearby but are destinations people go to for reasons other than wildlife. Too many highlights, but I have to shout out the Rhinoceros Hornbill as a runner up for my bird of the year last year. Never did see an elephant though).
