I responded to a post on animalblog that cited a recent article in the journal "Proceedings" of the National Academy of Sciences. Here's my response on medical research in general. I recently had a discussion about medical research using animals. This story on HIV research is one example.

Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. It's from a Reuters article from last May.I Researchers can continue most experiments on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans -- after European Union lawmakers watered down proposals to restrict testing.

I don't support animal research and I have no sympathy for animal researchers. I don't believe they are working for human welfare. I would never advocate violence against a researcher. I almost quit a book club a year ago because one of the members is a proponent of medical research.

This is an excellent article that appeared in the Boston Globe last week. The feud between animal rights activists and researchers is among the bitterest in science. Indeed, it often isn't even the best science: New drugs that show great promise in mice, for example, often confer zero benefit to humans, or even prove harmful.

The Humane Society began a campaign in March 2008 to get 600 university presidents to sign a pledge to prevent severe pain and distress in animals used in research. Here's a campus article about Northwestern University , one of the schools that have NOT signed. So far only 37 presidents have signed it.

Therefore, this Boston Globe article saddens me on both levels. Scientific advances over the last three years have now made it feasible to easily tinker with rat genes, creating the possibility of far better models of certain human diseases, and potentially shortening the time it takes to develop medications.

I came across these stories about two different medical experiments using mice. Aren't there better things to research? Whether intentionally or not, the title of the article catches the frivolity of the research."Don't However, it involved exposing rats to chemicals at levels that humans are usually not exposed to.
