Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. About the size of a hare, it is more clumsily jumping, than running… and that tail… It was the European Otter ! Photo by Branislav Dencic.

And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. Whenever I come here, I am focused on birds, but I have had some good mammal sighting as well: a roe deer swimming across a pond (only its head and antlers visible), a pair of otters playing in the water, a curious (young?)

The treatment of the animals at the Woodbridge, NJ SeaQuest is horrific. This was the same for many other of the animals there: potbelly pigs, a sad otter, rabbits, chickens and Bengal cats.
