I’ve always wondered what animal or insect genus has the biggest difference between the smallest and biggest. For example, birds have hummingbirds which are tiny (~10g) and then ostriches which are massive (100kg). But are there others, like spiders or fish? What do you think?

The original story is that emus and ostriches and moas and such evolved as a separate group of birds from all the other birds, from the basal birdish thing that gave rise to all the living birds, and became a large land bird.

Oh sure, you can go to Rock Creek Park or the Tidal Basin to seek out living avian species, or visitors can head to the Smithsonian museums for a dose of past and present bird lore from all over the world. For any of us who have seen Ostriches or Emus in real life, the link is not hard to believe. Looks like a bird to me!

The birdlife here is wonderful, a ten-night safari should give you over 200 species, (2018 & 2019 both gave us 242!). Add the chance of the African animals you’d expect, Elephant , Lion , Leopard and a host of antelope, who’s mouth would not water at the prospect? While we look for animal tracks, you’ll see so much else as we go.

Anyway, I was much keener to see this kingfisher than the Emu (who I consider to be a bit of an underprivileged ostrich). I was surprised that this species is named for its vocalization – which sounds like laughter. For example, the Diamond Dove is the world’s second-smallest species of the columbidae order ( source ).
