Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The other sub-species, Calidris canutus roselaari , migrates along the Pacific Coast and breeds in Alaska and the Wrangel Island in Russia.

This is when we might see the greatest variety and numbers of wood-warblers, where we can watch dizzying groups of swallows zip through the skies as kettles of Turkey Vultures , and Broad-winged and Swainson’s Hawks flow towards South America. The Brown Pelican and the Peruvian Pelican are closely related and once were considered the same species. The Brown Pelican occurs in both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America and northern South America. The species reached pre-pesticide numbers by the late 1990s and was fully delisted in 2009.

There is another area of the Queens County CBC where a team will also likely see Monk Parakeets , Myipsitta monachus , but I am seriously determined to count that bird for my area, Coastal Flushing, a section of northeast Queens, New York, that includes Whitestone, home of one of the loudest invasive bird species in the U.S. And cell towers.

If this was America, we might not be concerned because starlings are an invasive species, at least in North America. They feed on animal plankton and build their nests by burrowing in the dirt on offshore islands. So, here we go… Fighting in Iraq has been affecting starlings.

And, I started daydreaming about encountering something a little different, maybe a Horned Frog, Ceratophrys cornuta, a large, squat green and brown frog of South America, with a wide mouth large enough to eat other frogs as well as reptiles. As Mattison says, “Frogs are unlikely to be mistaken for any other type of animal.”
