Last summer, Alley Cat Allies conducted an analysis of Illinois Department of Agriculture reports collected from the 247 animal pounds and shelters licensed by the state that handled cats in 2006. More than 60,000 cats were killed in Illinois animal pounds and shelters in 2006. Things don't look too good.

Some of these discussions make me think: Boy, that Rick Berman, that FBI, those people who spend their lives using and killing animals for fun and profit--don't need to do much to bring this movement down because we're doing it ourselves. I rejoined my local animal shelter's volunteer program a few months ago (long story as to why I quit in the first place). Very sweet and gentle animal (I have a soft spot for pits.and pugs!) Someone had called in an animal cruelty report. I had a couple of dogs when I was a kid, but I mostly grew up with cats.

A branch of Palm Beach County's Animal Care & Control that has been closed for a long, long time and has reopened. There are likely 30 unsterilized cats remaining, but they're doing a very good job of avoiding yours truly. Here's the biggest feral cat I've ever seen, who looks like somebody's house cat.

The vet did give me a hard time about the dogs' animal-free diets (my traditional vets don't, ironically), and my response was that unless she could show me some research that his particular type of injury needs animal protein to heal, I wasn't going to change anything. Kelly wondered whether the term "vegan" is " worth fighting for " given the latest trend of seemingly oxymoronish (waiting for that one to hit Webster's) terminology from the mouths of people who want to find a way to use animals, yet make it appear that they're not. Before 6pm, he doesn't eat animals. And they're all pretty obvious.

From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. It's almost twice the cost, but it's not animal-based, she has no adverse reaction and there are no warnings about the quality. What a relief!
