Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" The animals on farms are created for the sole purpose of human consumption.

During the filming of this production, I got to experience “dirt hawking&#. There are many examples in the animal world of pack behavior. I have never been one to advocate the needless killing of animals for whatever purpose. Raptors are wild animals that are driven by their instinct to find food.

The topic was the concept of humans as predators, or hunters, or really, eaters of meat, and I was discussing the many ways in which people misconceived this notion. This allowed them to carry out experiments such as giving some bones to the hyenas to see what they would look like after being munched on for a while. Photo by Mikebaird.

Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. We went to settle into our room, and since I had about an hour to kill before dinner, I took a quick walk around the property. It is truly a magical place, an experience like none other.
