It’s been nearly three weeks since the family and I left Breckenridge but I’m still thinking about all the birds that we enjoyed from my aunt and uncle’s backyard deck at 10,500 feet above sea level. We spent three days in Breckenridge and each morning I was the first in the family to awaken. And the finches!

It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. Before leaving the safety of the car I heeded the park’s advice and checked for animal tracks belonging to any biting, gnawing, mauling, trampling, stabbing or disembowelling species. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. No doubt the National Parks are aware of the situation, but it is also hard to deal with feral animals in remote areas. We knew we may get wet, but we also may experience different birds in a cooler environment.
