On Being Vegan "Friendly"

The Factual table I posted yesterday annoyed me a bit, and here's why: the categories "vegan," "vegetarian," and "vegan-friendly." Vegan: Got it. Vegetarian, I assume, serves no flesh but does serve other, equally disturbing animal products. It was a fabulous vegan meal. So what does "vegan-friendly" really mean?

On Mainstreaming Veganism

Vegans are now on the mainstream's radar, and unlike some vegans, I do care about what goes on in the mainstream. And last night I volunteered at an event benefiting the Office Depot Foundation (which provides backpacks for kids loaded with school essentials, among other things) and someone asked me if there were any vegan desserts!

On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. After all, they "love" the animals they kill. Or vegan pumpkin pie.
