It was specifically a video about the primate or ape Gigantopithecus. Now, something that caught my fancy, that was stated by the reactionist/YouTube personality, was that this ape, this early hominid if you would, which died out just prior to the arrival of humans or because of the arrival of humans.

One way all gorillas may be easily distinguished from other apes is by the strong bony crest that adults, both males and females, acquire at the top of their skulls, which gives their heads a characteristic cone or dome form. The crest serves as a support for the gorilla’s extraordinarily strong jaw muscles.

It is technically correct, and recently fashionable, to insist that any living animal is a member of the larger group that contains it phylogenetically, i.e., ancestrally, with that group often named after the known animal that roots the tree. So, for example, humans are apes. And smaller. And smaller. Until turkey size or so.

Here are the results of the EU flirtation with restricting research on primates. The EU's executive Commission last year proposed a range of measures to improve the welfare of the 12 million vertebrate animals used in experiments each year, mostly mice and rats. Nothing, nothing makes me angrier than animal researchers.

I recently was escorted through a large primate research laboratory by its director. If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. Tags: animal experimentation animal research. These chimps are healthy and well-fed.
