We can stop using animals and "allocate resources" to educate Homo sapiens worldwide to change their relationship to the animals around them. if we believe it's our right to do what we want with the lives of other animals. . . . But for now, we have a book that describes how we got here and what we might do.

I've been out of every loop I used to be in because my work outside of veganism and animal rights came a-calling in a most critical way. And it doesn't seem to matter as there is a cadre of new bloggers and writers, including several who analyze the mainstream news as it relates to animals and also religion.

Lesson #20 We still don't know what will make a critical mass of people go vegan. Obviously (I think), education is the key. But other than multi-pronged, multi-media, persistence, I have no idea what will be necessary to make most people go vegan. Yes, I see on Twitter that someone read Eating Animals and went vegan that day.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. At ARAN many of our volunteers work day and night fighting animal abuse- -we're simply asking you for just two hours during our week of action against the Greyhound industry in Ireland. Need reminding why cruelty to animals is wrong?

Finally, if you know someone who gravitates toward the philosophical issues around our use of animals, this is a good book. I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. Then again, he is not against the consumption of animals, " in general " (198).

There is a general consensus that vegetarianism and veganism are different philosophically. The underlying premise is that you can know what is right (such as me knowing what's right then eating cow flesh in the form of filet mignon for a year), but that by no means will necessarily manifest in your behavior. It is certainly likely that a similar phenomenon would occur if vegan vegetarianism became a widespread movement in the U.S. But so could lots of other things: wearing an animal rights button, picketing meat-packing houses, and so on.
