In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. And people that work in either conservation or animal welfare tend to like animals.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Today it is a different situation, i learned from then about respecting animals and my life has been devoted to ending their suffering and torment. Need reminding why cruelty to animals is wrong?

An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. Here's the full article from the Los Angeles Times.

And that means for the animal rights movement: Social entities like compassion, empathy and suffering are very important factors to motivate humans to change their behaviour. In contrast, abstract-rational entities, like personhood or rights, are not. The campaign should not demand huge changes in society.
