The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. It is a good place for South African birders, as several species are found here and nowhere else in South Africa, and it holds a small number of endemics that it shares with the Mozambique lowlands. Tembe Elephant Park is a mosaic of savannah and forest.

Note however that the yellow often strays further up the leg. They are found exclusively in the eastern hemisphere with a strong presence in Africa and the Middle East. There are more similarities easily seen by the casual observer; the Reef-Heron also sports two head plumes and their feet contrast dramatically with their darker legs.

They are generally regarded as summer visitors, arriving back from their wintering grounds in Africa in March, and departing again in September. According to the Birds of the Western Palearctic , they will attack Ravens and Egyptian and Griffon Vultures if they stray too close to their nest sites, while ignoring buzzards harriers and kites.

Yup, I was rescued in Africa. While we call them “strays,” implying they just absent-mindedly wandered away from home, most of them are what the rest of the world calls “street” dogs (and cats). Poor countries with lots of trash on the streets and no spay/neuter clinics definitely have more street dogs.

Hence, for the rest of the world, I lowered my threshold to 400 and that worked well in Africa, but I soon discovered that for Asia I need to go further down, to 300. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger and Gaur (highway 37 passes through the park and the rhinos and wild elephants can be spotted straying near the road).
