Nearly every dog owner buys a collar for their new pet but few are aware of the long history and many different types of collars. In situations where dogs were primarily guarding domestic animals, collars tended to have studs or spikes to frustrate the jaws of a marauding wolf. By Augie Berings, Bering’s Hardware.

This new campaign, sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council, hopes to reverse this trend and find homes for these homeless, lovable pets.

ALDF points to the following examples for why a registry is needed to help animal guardians, law enforcement and shelters protect their animals: Robert Rydzewski : In 2004, the then 29-year-old upstate New Yorker shot his neighbor’s dog in the face twice. Two months later, he killed another neighbor’s Welsh Corgi with an ax.

But even parents who aren’t crazy about pets or did not own them as kids can help change this trend. I didn’t get my first dog until I was 20, but since then I have been making up for lost time. Today I own 40 outdoor dogs and two more who live indoors! A particularly excitable dog is not necessary.

The domestic dog was once and still often is Canis familiaris as opposed to the wolf, Canis lupus , but the former which is really a subspecies of the latter is now Canis lupus familiaris. Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well.

Specifically, the increasing meat-consumption trend could be reversed if consumers paid the true price for meat. If these policies were adopted, small-scale animal agriculture would be a more economical model, and people would eat less meat. Human beings, like dogs, are omnivores.
