Today, Barn Owls can be found across both islands, hunting open fields at twilight or comfortably resting in abandoned relics of the sugar cane industry. Visitors to the Caroni Bird Sanctuary can often see a pair roosting together in the mangrove. Barn Owl. I couldn’t believe it. Tropical Screech-Owl.

It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a Greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a man named Geoff Grewcock and known as a willing haven for Animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need. But Jasmine had other ideas.

I'd say no argument here if this were some kind of sanctuary situation, and the animals were in need of a loving home for the rest of their lives. A violation of trust or confidence, an abandonment of something committed to one's charge. No hormones, no "feed" that is unnatural for them and/or genetically modified. It's just not right.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. In June 2006, Jane and I visited a chimpanzee sanctuary near Girona, Spain. They were brought separately to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn., Chimpanzees also dance at the onset of heavy rains and during violent gusts of wind.
