According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. but on the one hand, this is not a sci-fi blog and I am not interested in science fiction (excluding of course Douglas Adams), and on the other hand, the answer from my side would be “no” anyway. .”

Apparently, one of the threats to this species comes from the bioaccumulation of mercury in its feathers – though I balked at paying USD 40 for the scientific paper providing the details, from the abstract and the location of the authors, it seems they examined feathers of this bird living in an abandoned mining region in Guiyang, China.

In this species (as in other jacanas), the females get by abandoning their partner after laying eggs and leaving incubation and chick-rearing to the males. Possibly also for doing the dishes. I think this is a juvenile Grey Fantail.

What’s not to like about citizen science, conservation, and transforming a day of slaughter into a day of enjoying being outside watching birds? Kirtland’s Warbler wouldn’t go extinct, birders wouldn’t abandon their favorite winter activity in droves, and the birds wouldn’t even notice.
