I have encountered a few of the more quirky members of the family, including the brilliant and aptly-named African Emerald Cuckoo, India’s ultra-shy Sirkeer Malkoha, and the fascinating Lesser Ground Cuckoo in Costa Rica. It reminded me of a Roadrunner, which is, of course, also a member of the cuckoo family.

We chatted for a bit more and then I hung up and returned to the family. Once I rejoined them we headed to the beach and collected shells before exploring some of the old abandoned buildings at Fort Tilden. After too short a time with the bird I thanked my fellow birders and bade them farewell. Happy Desi and happy Corey.

There were opportunities to go to far flung places like the islands of the Pacific or the coast of Canada or the Yorkshire Dales… Anyway, as I was obsessed by Africa at the time, I leapt at the opportunity to go to Namibia to collect samples of bat DNA for a biogeography project. I think we caught perhaps three bats.

Hearing and seeing a bluebird bring to his mind the process of tapping trees and boiling the sap collected down to syrup. He is happy the bluebird has returned and he hopes that it will nest by his house in “Downy’s cell,&# that is, the abandoned hole of a Downy Woodpecker. Get yours today!
