Tragically, I never saw any birds near the nest later on – I guess they abandoned it, decided to quit procreating, or just got eaten by some other bird or cat. The male at work. The juvenile Chinese Blackbirds get older but still look kind of stupid.

Birding Jianfengling, Hainan (A-H)

Jianfengling National Forest Park is a park in the West of Hainan – the tourist websites claim that it is “the largest and best-preserved tropical original forest in China”, which – if true – is a rather sad statement given the wide inroads that commercial agriculture has made into the park. But then, who knows?

According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. Maybe better not to ever meet such a “mother” (given that I have been living in China for too long to be up-to-date regarding political correctness etc., But maybe that is actually a good thing.

The 20 most common birds in Shanghai (Part 2)

Even in the comparable wilderness of coastal Shanghai, it is far more likely to see the tree sparrow near an abandoned hut than in a more pristine spot. Still, a bird that has its moments – and I am always surprised how this sparrow really seems to enjoy human presence, however destructive it may be.

If you are looking for a use of a cardboard box, one of the more interesting ideas is to use it to house an abandoned juvenile Striated Heron. When Cattle Egrets go to the local discotheque, they tend to overdo their makeup a bit. There is a nice description of the process until the release of the bird into the wild here, with photos.

Baihualing – The Sequel

At this moment, Baihualing is the eBird hotspot in China which has by far the largest number of species – 486. With 398 species, Nanhui is trailing far behind despite being covered by a much larger number of checklists (2225 compared to 608). So, it is certainly justified to cover this spot in more than one post.
