After securing our passage, I patiently waited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a place we have never been and lacked any knowledge of, we were in for a complete surprise. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species. The cats were eradicated by 1991, which left the mice population to go unchecked.

Experience shows that bird parents do feed babies in makeshift nests reattached to tree branches, bushes, gutters, and even tree cavity sections duct taped to another tree. A parent bird’s instinct to feed and protect their young is very strong, and they will not willingly abandon their babies. Bird brought in by a cat or dog.

I once had a cat who loved to lick plastic bags, and while I find the pleasure in this hard to comprehend, it still seems more understandable to me than the joy (?) According to Couzens, after laying the eggs, females sometimes immediately abandon their first mate and pair up with another male. of catching extremely small fish.

After writing this last sentence, I looked up the species in the HBW and found the sentence “Song poorly documented” in the appropriate section, while with regard to calls, the description is that “call is a two-note raspy nasal ‘ryeeh-reh’”.

Even among our primate relatives, whoa are generally very smart, “Theory of Mind” is found in only a few species. If the crows can distinguish between UCA and HCA, they should treat UCA related events with caution, but be more indifferent to events caused by a HCA, unless of course the HCA is a cat.

Due to the large number of specialty and range-restricted species it is a must-visit destination for any South African birder who wants to surpass the 800-mark of a Southern African life-list. I can speak from experience that this place should only be accessed by a 4 x 4 vehicle. Just be prepared for well…almost anything.
