Same with mammals, fish, etc. I thought that animals were just friendly and not scared of us humans but I'm a unique case I've come to find out. I even raised a juvenile magpie last summer when her mom abandoned her a little too early before she was ready to find food on her own.

The Sacred Ibis was seen as the incarnation of the god Thoth, who (with gods apparently better at multitasking than humans) was (or maybe still is, who knows?) ” Somebody should have warned the poor kites not to copy everything that humans do. Possibly also for doing the dishes. .'” Two ways of life folded at once.

Most troubling for me, because I think of them as my birds, is the abandoned nesting attempt by a pair of Pacific Loons. The next day the pair was still in the lake, but egg was still there which gave me some hope that the nest hadn’t been abandoned. Bonus mammal image, a summer Arctic Hare.

When you think of invasives, you think of the birds that have been helped by human beings to get where they are, such as House Sparrow or European Starling. The Cattle Egret is native to Africa, where it is a familiar sight among herds of large mammals. Cattle Egret has been introduced by humans to Hawaii and the Seychelles.

These two islands are about halfway between the tip of South Africa and Antarctica in the Subantarctic Indian Ocean, have had relatively few human visitors, and are primarily inhabited with some of the rarest seabirds in the world and a smaller number of mammals. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.
