My Ten Best Birds of 2019

I saw 863 species of birds, bringing my life list to 1,820. Such travel brings a lot of birds and the 863 species I saw this year is the most species I have ever seen. How can I narrow down the eight-hundred-sixty-three species to ten? How can I, by listing only ten, call eight-hundred-fifty-three species not worthy?

What the rings reveal

I photographed the Black-tailed Godwit in my photograph ( above ) on 18 September 2020. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. In the summer of 2020 it was back at Brancaster Staithe again, with the first record on 23 July. Black-tailed Godwits on the move. Did it then move on to Ireland?

Then I found out that there was this vocalization called a ‘call,’ so I thought each bird species had its own individual song (but just the males) and individual call. How do they know? I do wish there was more about research on female bird song.

Superb Lyrebird by John Burgoyne ©2020 . Her bird books are Birds by the Shore (previously Notes from the Shore, 1995 and re-issued 2019) and the award-winning The Genius of Birds (2016), which focused on studies of bird cognition. It’s fascinating stuff.
