A Lake Reborn… sort of

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. The good news is that this summer central Mexico is experiencing its best rains since 2018. While numbers were low, our first migratory Baird’s Sandpipers and Wilson’s Phalaropes had arrived from their breeding grounds up north, right on time.

Saving the Drowning Cormorant, or the Kerkini Lake, Greece

We are entering the mixed colony of 11 species ( Grey , Squacco , Purple and Black-crowned Night Herons ; Great , Little and, recently, Cattle Egrets ; Eurasian Spoonbill (below) and Glossy Ibis ; Pygmy and Great Cormorant ). These visits are strictly regulated and the birds are habituated to people, showing no reaction to our presence.

Birding the Dampier Downs Road

Travelling slowly along the road in recent weeks we have been able to add a few new birds to the 2018 year list and they include the Pied Honeyeater , Black Honeyeater and Varied Lorikeet. The Grevillea pyramidalis – Caustic Bush – have mostly finished flowering now, but they are also a beautiful tree that grows in the area.

A paper titled “Crested Goshawk Accipiter trivirgatus may adapt well to life in urban areas across its range in Asia” already made the same observation in 2018. It may also just indicate that the bird wants to pee but thinks it is not quite the right place and time to do so (my hypothesis, not disproven yet). but they do.
