New York City apartments don’t allow feeders to be hung from fire escapes (though I know certain birders that skirt that rule), and it wasn’t until I had already been birding for four-and-a-half years that I obtained a small yard in central New Jersey in which I could place a feeder or two or three. I came late to bird feeding.

One of the highlights of autumn for many birders in eastern North America is the annual release of the Winter Finch Forecast. Two Red-breasted Nuthatches in an illustration by Louis Agassiz Fuertes (1874-1927) for the Eighth and Ninth Reports of the Forest, Fish and Game Commission of the State of New York, 1902-1903.
