Baby birds are cuteness personified, possibly even more so than other baby animals, including human babies, and pose interesting questions of survival and development. Baby birds may be separated from the nest and their parents because of natural occurrences (violent weather, floods) or unknowing human interference or predators.

The human and economic consequences were dramatic, and continue to be felt. Nevertheless, the 2017 CBC tallied 1,934 birds of 82 species, both of which were low counts for past CBCs ( e.g., the 2016 CBC had 2,579 birds, 97 species). Some plants had started to re-sprout, but recovery was in the very early stages.

Appendix A lists “Rare Migrants and Vagrants,” 81 species, including birds for which there are no documented records, but which are listed in the literature or eBird. I’m not saying this is good or bad, I do appreciate the careful documentation of the taxonomic notes and other materials. Fantasy is the key word here.

The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. But no one who has ever cared for another creature – be it bird, animal, or human – can comprehend, much less cope with, this kind of brutal, pointless killing. They are docile and devoted parents who will not leave their nests.

As 2015 comes to a close and birders the world over start thinking about what 2016 will bring we here at 10,000 Birds would like to take a moment to celebrate our best birds of 2015. 2015 was great and here’s hoping 2016 will be even better. Hope your 2016 is as good as our (except for Mike’s) 2015 was!
