Humane Society Exposes Petland Practices

Critter News

The Humane Society has another great investigation into the shady practices of a corporate giant. Not so, says the Humane Society. Documented USDA violations at some of Petland's breeders and suppliers included dirty, unkempt enclosures; inadequate shelter from the cold; dogs kept in too small cages; and inadequate veterinary care. This news story slipped by in November. This time it's Petland, who I'm glad to say has no stores in my area (that I know of.)

Why Justice for Animals Is the Social Movement of Our Time

Animal Ethics

"There is no longer dispute among serious scientists that humans aren’t the only animals who have the capacity to suffer physically and mentally. In a study first published in 2011, my colleagues and I showed how chimpanzees used in the biomedical and entertainment industries suffered from PTSD and other mental disorders – much like the psychiatric conditions I’ve documented in human torture survivors."

Animal Rights is Pernicious Nonsense?

Animal Person

Latimer refers to his previous two posts where he has "documented the ethical and moral shallowness of the 'animal rights' credo itself, which is based more on an anti-human self hatred, taking the form of a 'moral' squeamishness concerned more with stamping out human 'cruelty,' no matter what the social or economic costs might be. I think he's the anti-human person full of self hatred, and this is a case of projection.

Pam Anderson Urges End to India's Animal Testing

Critter News

Former Baywatch star and model Pamela Anderson has accused one of India's most prestigious research centres of animal cruelty, urging it to retire decades-old test monkeys and adopt humane practices. It broke my heart to see the suffering that is documented in the enclosed video", wrote Anderson, in a letter sent on behalf of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). I don't always know how I personally feel about Pamela Anderson, but I can't argue with her (non-acting) work.

Animal Research Grants a Waste of Taxpayer Money

Critter News

Each year, millions of cats, dogs, non-human primates and other animals suffer and die in research laboratories. World Week for Animals in Laboratories (April 17-24) exposes their plight and the broken federal research funding system that perpetuates outdated animal experiments at the expense of modern and more humane technologies. Animal research is not necessary to promote human health despite claims from vested interests.

Is Shelter Appreciation Week a Sham?

Critter News

HSUS’ latest public relations gimmick is part of a larger attempt by the very animal control officers responsible for this neglect and abuse to reform their image from one of “dog catcher” to “humane law enforcement.” The article documents a number of recent abuses nationwide, as well as the difficulties reformers have faced in trying to stop abuse at shelters. Nathan Winograd has an interesting piece in the Examiner about the recent HSUS Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

USHS Alleges Animal Abuse at the University of Louisiana New Iberia Research Laboratory

The Humane Society of the United States released the video scenes Wednesday, saying that’s only part of the documentation of what it claimed were 338 violations of federal law and policy at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s New Iberia Research Laboratory. Here is a link to the Humane Society. Actually, it's more then allegations. They have video. The video footage shows monkeys biting themselves and slamming against the bars of small cages.

that slaughters horses for human consumption. Since it is illegal to sell horse meat for human consumption in the U.S., you might wonder how it is that Cavel has been able to brutally slaughter horses for human consumption right here in the U.S. One can't kill horses for human consumption within the U.S., but that leaves open the possibility of slaughtering horses for human consumption abroad.

Moral Vegetarianism, Part 8 of 13

Animal Ethics

Not only are they killed in cruel ways, but it is well documented that they are raised in ways that cause them great discomfort and agony. Becoming a vegetarian is the most practical and effective step one can take towards [sic; kbj] ending both the killing of non-human [sic; kbj] animals and the infliction of suffering upon them. One suspects that the SPCA and the American Humane Society have done more to stop cruelty to animals than vegetarians ever could.

Prima Facie vs. Ultima Facie Wrongness

Animal Ethics

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). Problem #1 Let us temporarily assume for the sake of argument that it would be permissible to eat the flesh of an animal who was raised humanely and killed entirely painlessly.
