After all, I’m sure North America has suffered under the tyrannical grip of a polar vortex before, even though the term seems new to me, just as we survived last year’s Snowpocalypse and Sharknado. Only three days later and after torrential rain, but eager to get a start on the 2014 year list we returned to the ephemeral lakes. The list was going to suffer due to the rain and the dispersal of so many of the bird species that we saw only three days earlier. By now the lakes were very full and there were no muddy edges.

As part of my commitment to birding excellence in 2014, I signed up for eBird alerts — receiving messages each time a bird not yet on my year list is reported in Missoula County. Though hardly common, Great Gray sightings are a yearly occurrence in Western Montana, and it is one of the twelve species of owl known to breed in the state.

In a review of Gorman’s book on woodpeckers, the reviewer (Koenig) suggests a woodpecker big year, as he reasons that the chance to encounter a wave of Buff-rumped Woodpeckers in his (presumably North American) backyard is very slim … Not only humans suffer from Harry Potter books.
