Their movements and breeding is determined by rainfall and for that reason they are not always where you think they might be. Only three days later and after torrential rain, but eager to get a start on the 2014 year list we returned to the ephemeral lakes. By now the lakes were very full and there were no muddy edges.

Though hardly common, Great Gray sightings are a yearly occurrence in Western Montana, and it is one of the twelve species of owl known to breed in the state. As part of my commitment to birding excellence in 2014, I signed up for eBird alerts — receiving messages each time a bird not yet on my year list is reported in Missoula County.
