In fact, if I remember correctly, it was 2013 when I first noticed (from an office window) a huge collection of sticks at the crown of a large immortelle tree. These irruptive visitors to T&T always are a pleasure to experience. We counted seven of these alluring birds while I killed my camera battery.

Birdlife South Africa has previously done two of these types of trips before, previously called Flock to Sea – Namibia in 2013 and Flock to Nowhere in 2017, in partnership with MSC Cruises. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. Regardless, we made it Marion and all else added to the experience.

I thought of this experience as I read Still the Same Hawk , a collection of twelve essays about nature and New York City, edited by John Waldman. Not surprisingly, I found the most compelling essays were those by people who had had similar experiences to mine. And, I put Matthews on my list of writers I want to read in 2013.

Fred Tavares of the Brazilian team had the following to say of his team’s experience in the Amazon, “There are so many birds. “I am covered in bug bites, my legs are killing me and I got sick and threw up from the altitude,” Ryan Terrill, 26, a member of the winning American team, the LSU Tigrisomas, commented.

Ironically, the bird in the photograph served as the model for the bird in the lithograph; it was killed, skinned, preserved and stuffed a few days after the photograph was taken. I ache that I will never see what the photographer has seen, but hope that maybe if I try hard enough I will see some kind of echo of this experience in the image.
