But when on June 23, 2013 I decided to follow a road just to see where it led, and it led to Pino Real, it was the first in a whole chain of exciting site discoveries. And this was once a wonderful patch of bird-rich understory.

Elegant Tern in New York State

Long overdue, the first confirmed state record of Elegant Tern * was found on 3 July 2013 by a trio of birders on the mudflats at Cupsogue Beach County Park as the tide was getting very high. The next day many New York birders celebrated Independence Day by mobbing the flats where they all dipped. It was almost undoubtedly the same bird.

We simply refuse to squee. Some people love books like that. Think of birds too much as humans and you lose the specialness that makes them birds.
