Tucked away at the extreme eastern end of the Mediterranean, Cyprus is regarded politically as part of Europe, but when it comes to birds it’s very much Middle Eastern in flavour, with a number of species that are hard or even impossible to find in Europe, plus a trio of endemics. It was strange to hear it here in Cyprus.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove Explosion: Coming to a Town Near You!

In the mid-1970s, a local breeder was burglarized and a few of his birds escaped, after which the breeder released his remaining stock of about 50 birds 1. The northwestern spread of this non-native species made it to my yard a few years ago. And the last one shows the stats from 2013 to the present.

The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species.

Humboldt and Del Norte Counties offer top-knotch birding, and a suite of species that can’t be found in the rest of the state. 2013 was a great year for finding massive rafts of storm-petrels off Bodega Bay and Half Moon Bay. Black-vented Shearwater can be abundant in southern California waters some years, as they have 2013-2014.

The vast majority of the 10,000+ living species of birds are passerines, and the vast majority of those have a similar system of breeding: Mom and dad bird make a nest and share parental responsibilities roughly equally, if not identically. There are variations on that theme, of course. Even the non-passerines often follow this pattern.

The Crossley ID Guide: Britain & Ireland — A Review of the Book

I find the Crossley Guides, Eastern Birds and Raptors (fall 2013), very useful when I’m looking for new or unfamiliar birds (Linnet!), The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) has documented 596 bird species in the wild as at 1 January 2013; 265 are listed as Accidental, 59 as Scarce Visitor, and 2 as Extinct.
