Luckily, swarms of songbirds arrived on time, including one very handsome Fox Sparrow. As promised, I finally made it up to Owl Woods and the Braddock Bay area. Too bad the hawks and owls couldn’t make it too!

The Effects of Wildfires on Wildlife

While larger animals like deer and elk are usually able to escape the fire’s path, smaller animals like squirrels, foxes and snakes are not always so lucky. This was the case in the 23,958 acre Reading Fire that burned in Lassen Volcanic National Park in 2012 where I photographed this Black-backed Woodpecker.

Invasive species in Australia

European Red Foxes were brought into Australia in the 1850′s for recreational hunting and soon spread rapidly. On another occasion in 2012 we had four Rock Doves on a power line in town. They are now all over Australia, though in smaller numbers in Tasmania and in the north of Australia.
