As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. However, he went far afield to find a more familiar fowl.

Painted Redstart at Irvine Lake

In 2012 I got my 500th bird in the ABA area when I twitched a Painted Redstart at Lacy Park in San Marino, California. It was an enjoyable experience and the better views desired were definitely achieved. After all, I did see a Varied Thrush in lieu of the woodpecker so it wasn’t all bad. What more could I want?
