Swainson’s Hawks in Plumas County

The last time I visited Portola was in the summer of 2011 when the Swainson’s Hawks ( Buteo swainsoni ) were nesting there. They are listed as a Species of Special Concern in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, and as Threatened in California. This is the painting of the species by John James Audubon in the early 1800′s.

National Audubon Society Birds of North America: A Guide Review

Pough “with illustrations in color of every species” by Don Eckelberry, Doubleday, 1946. The National Audubon Society Birds of North America covers all species seen in mainland United States, Canada and Baja California. The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

Greater Rheas, a species the Germans call Nandu, are very popular in Germany and frequently kept in zoos as well as private enclosures. Their current population stands at more than 150 birds (I have no recent population estimate, but there were 129 in 2012, up from 100 in 2011), and they are spreading slowly but consistently.

This thrush is extremely common in urban and suburban Germany and one of the most conspicuous bird species here, comparable to the American Robin in North America. Because this was such a common species, we lacked quantitative data to be certain that this lack was an actual “situation” and not just the ordinary seasonal variation.
