Initially, I wasn’t that excited about seeing mammals. The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. We also got great views of a very small mammal, Wahlberg’s Epauletted Fruit Bat, at Satara.

First Outbreak of Usutu Virus in Germany

The Blackbird die-off that was observed in north-west Baden-Württemberg, neighbouring parts of Rheinland-Pfalz and southern Hessen in 2011 was caused by the Usutu Virus. Its host range includes mosquitoes of the genus Culex , birds, and mammals, with the mosquitoes acting as the virus’ principal vector.

Plop in the middle of the sparrow section I found the Sparrow Nest Quick-Look Chart, a 2-page spread listing sparrow species and columns for nest placement, habitat, and unmarked eggs (an identification characteristic). To be fair, the Sparrow Chart is cited in the sparrow family group write-up, but it could be easily missed.).
