Lots of Birds Being Killed in Ireland and the UK

A horrific total of 6 eagles, 10 buzzards, 3 red kites, a Peregrine falcon and a sparrowhawk have all been poisoned in recent weeks across Ireland, England and Scotland. Tags: wildlife crime UK Ireland. It's just weird how many birds are being killed in England, Scotland and Ireland.

Definitively the Egyptians!

In 2010, a joint expedition by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and the Sudanese Wildlife Society (SWS) found a further 17 electrocuted Egyptian Vultures. Up to now there have been almost 80 confirmed electrocuted Egyptian Vultures in that area. My first ever Balkan Egyptian Vultures!

Could have done better? Confessions of a year-lister.

Spoonbills nested in Britain for the first time for 300 years in 2010, when a small colony became established at Holkham in North Norfolk. Inland in the Alentejo I found Great Spotted Cuckoos and the first returning Short-toed Eagles. On the plus side, Waxwings and White-tailed Eagles (10 in the sky at once) were great to see.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of March 2011)

The Snow Geese at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge will soon be winging their way north, so he spent some quality time with them, his best birds of the weekend. Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of January 2010? Blue Tailed BeeEater, White Bellied Sea Eagle, White Rumped Shama were other ones I particularly enjoyed.
