In theory the eggs are laid, the adults share the incubation of the eggs for 28 days and then fluffy chicks emerge. Well, basically it is a good area for putting a nest as there is ample food nearby and the dunes offer protection and good views of incoming predators. If only it was that easy!

Is The Hooded Grebe About To Go Extinct?

During the breeding seasons 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 we monitored 251 lakes on the main plateaus of Santa Cruz province, southern Patagonia, Argentina, where the entire population of Hooded Grebes spends the breeding season. We only observed 6 breeding colonies, two in 2009/2010 and four in 2010/ 2011, totalling 242 nesting attempts.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding update

Egg loss to predation has been extraordinarily bad this year and all of the nests mentioned in the last post were lost and all of the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers laid a new clutch of eggs. In fact they have not just laid once again, but many pairs have laid up to five clutches of eggs this season.

The Brown and Peruvian Pelicans

Some pesticides killed pelicans directly, while DDT contamination led to thin-shelled eggs that broke under the weight of the parents. The species reached pre-pesticide numbers by the late 1990s and was fully delisted in 2009. Pelicans are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The Brown Pelican is Louisiana’s state bird.
