This pair of birds, which we presume to be the exact same pair, has been laying eggs in this area since 2008. We have observed Pied Oystercatcher parents chase of White-bellied Sea-Eagles and unfortunately there are feral cats and feral foxes have become more prevalent too.

Yours truly counting birds in the Pastures of Great Bustard from the Russian made UAZ 4×4 in February 2008. Not the strictly protected bustards, but Red Foxes, Brown Hares, Pheasants , as well as Hooded Crows and Rooks. What treats do they face? What is the latest outcome of all this?

Savannah Sparrows can be found foraging in the same type of open habitats that Chipping Sparrows prefer while big rufous Fox Sparrows seem to prefer habitat like a Swamp Sparrow as they mostly move through quite quickly (though some do winter over). The last time I was out there was in January of 2008 and Daisy and I had really enjoyed both the boat ride and the island itself. Our time on the island was spent looking at birds, exploring, picnicking, throwing rocks in the water, and admiring a very cooperative Santa Cruz Island Fox.

It gets very confusing when I’m trying to look at subspecies descriptions in multiple field guides (“Slate-Colored Fox Sparrow” in Sibley West, for example, is “Western Slate-colored Group” in Stokes West). Subspecies: Sibley’s focus is on “distinctive regional populations” rather than subspecies as a label.
