During the period from 1994 through 2006, I mostly dedicated myself to itinerant ministry. My wife and I have been pastoring a local church since 2006, which discourages too much travelling. We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects. In other words, I travelled, sometimes every weekend.

That is how we met, back in 2006. My wife has chosen Bodrum for our vacation, while I checked the Internet and met the birdman of Bodrum.

The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. Going even lower, we add a Cirl Bunting and a Syrian Woodpecker.

I had observed several Black Swans along the coast and some of them were wearing neck bands and were originally banded as far back as 2006 at Albert Park and had moved to the coast to feed. A lone Australian Pelican waddled across the sand and back into the sea in search of food in the late afternoon light. Australian Pelican.

Wood Stork and White Pelican. But between 1988 and 2006, Project Feedwatch showed a fifty-percent decline in Evening Grosbeak sightings. Little by little, I expanded my horizons. One by one, birds that I’d thought of as pictures on a page became real. Little Auk and Red-throated Loon. Orchard Oriole and Prothonotary Warbler.
