Perhaps the star bird here is the Nonggang Babbler , which was first observed by professional ornithologists only in 2005. Sunbirds are found in Africa and Asia, while hummingbirds are restricted to the Americas.” It looks quite distinct compared to some of the other recently discovered species.

Busch Gardens supports the conservation of and education about cheetahs through the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, which has donated nearly $100,000 to cheetah efforts in Africa since 2005 and also helps fund conservation programs for white rhinos, marine animals and many other species around the world.

That is why it is such amazingly awesome news that the British Birdwatching Fair raised £242,000 to help conserve a species that could become the first recorded bird extinction in mainland Africa. Here’s hoping the Liben Lark defies the odds and long graces the grassy plains of Ethiopia!

Sometimes you gain armchair big ticks, like the White-tailed Blue-flycatcher I saw in Uganda in 2005 which later turned out to be in the Stenostiridae, a recently erected family. Sometimes you may even lose them, like the aforementioned woodswallows which are probably no longer a family.

In the end, it was birding that has taken him from his native Serbia, across the Balkans and Turkey, to the very borders of the Old World: East Anglia and Spain, southern Africa and, in the instance of this epic report, India.
