Over the years more and more people have looked for this species, but still very little is known of their movements and when there have been flooding rains in the south of the continent there have been twenty or more Australian Painted Snipe observed at swamps. So many questions can be asked of this mystery species. Where do they go?

When a species as prolific as the passenger pigeon once was ultimately expires, and promptly so on March 24, 1900, I’m apt to consider the rare but exceptional future sighting as a possibility, simply because I like to believe birds, or other creatures for that matter, don’t necessarily die within our specific time frames. The idea of Lost Animals was conceived after the publication of Extinct Birds (2001), a 400-page, four-pound book on 75 extinct species. Lost Birds looks at photographic representations of 28 species, 21 of which are birds. Some document one of the last views of the species, others are of the last representative of the species.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. et al 2001. The Spanish Colonial Experience and Domestic Animals. Which would be weird.
