I find them a moderately useful tool for sorting out my priorities. The list kinds crystalized during my first big trip, on which I knocked off my two big targets (the manta ray and whale shark) but since then beyond seeing an antelope (and then many other different kinds), it hasn’t budged much at all. Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. Still, I wish I had prepared. I wish I had read this book. The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges.

We left our chum slick and started tooling back towards land at a slow pace, following the Hudson Canyon so the water would be deep and relatively warm. Then I got tired and lied down and when I woke up two hours, a Bridled Tern , a Minke Whale , and a Loggerhead Sea Turtle had went by. This was a heck of a boat ride! It was awesome.
