Birdy Boating in Baringo

Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. A familiar Striated Heron elicited the opposite reaction altogether as they are the default small heron here in Trinidad. It was even pumping its tail, much like the New World species I am accustomed to.

Secrets of the Swamps

Some days ago I had the opportunity to explore the grossly underbirded southeastern corner of Trinidad. The Nariva Swamp is the largest wetland on Trinidad, giving to and taking from the relentless Atlantic Ocean on its eastern boundary. We managed to see both species of monkey, though – so we were ultimately well satiated.

Bloody Bay Birding

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. The confluence of fresh and salt water creates a small, nutrient-rich hideaway that is used by various species of fish as a nursery.

One Blustery Morning on a Desert Island

On our departure from Trinidad we experienced a five hour delay which not only dashed the chances of birding in Curaçao that day, but seriously jeopardized us catching two subsequent flights. Still on the lookout for anything avian, I managed to grab a Bananaquit before I returned to the shelter of our hotel room. . American Kestrel.
