Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. A familiar Striated Heron elicited the opposite reaction altogether as they are the default small heron here in Trinidad. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape.

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. The confluence of fresh and salt water creates a small, nutrient-rich hideaway that is used by various species of fish as a nursery. Specifically birds.
